In the fall of 2022, we went to the Embassy of India in Tokyo for an exhibition of Gond Art.

What is Gond Art?

Gond Art is a painting by an indigenous people called Pardan Gond living in India.

This ethnic group seems to have made a living from music.

Gond art is characterized by motifs depicting ethnic myths, animals and plants living in the forest, and delicate patterns laid within each motif.

The beauty of Gond art is its fineness.

There are more than 600 indigenous peoples in India

Through Gond Art, you can learn about their thought and culture.

Themes range from animals such as elephants, tigers and peacocks, to lumberjacks, deemals (tribes that live on fish), villagers’ prayers, funerals, and weddings.

インド大使館で開催された「ゴンドアート展」へ行きました。

ゴンド・アートは、インド住むパルダーン・ゴンドという先住民族が描く絵です。

バルダーンゴンド族は、歌を歌うことで謝礼をもらい生計を立てていました。

ゴンド・アートは、民族に伝わる神話を、森に住む動植物を描いたモチーフと、それぞれのモチーフの中に敷き詰められる繊細なパターン模様が主な特徴です。

ゾウやトラ、クジャクなどの動物から、木こりやディーマル（魚をとり生活する部族）、村人の祈りやお葬式、結婚式まで様々なものがテーマになっています。

自分の好きなゴンドアートを探してみるのも面白いかもしれません。
